When ASU hockey moved to the NCAA as a Division I program in the 2015-16 season, ASU athletic director Ray Anderon was given a six-year grace period to the construction of a Division I hockey facility. The program has faced setbacks from COVID over the past few years, but the arena plan received all approvals in December 2020 and has been ongoing ever since.

Anderson, along with Olsen and ASU President Michael Crow, wanted to create a place that would not only house ASU’s hockey program, but be beyond the university.
