Burning Fire Skates 13 miles northeast of Silver City
SILVER CITY, NM (KRQE) – The Skates Fire began burning Friday, June 10, 2022, three miles south of Mimbres. The US Forest Service confirmed the fire Friday evening and estimated its size at 80 acres.

Officials say resources assigned to the incident include multiple engines, a crew of 20, three hotshot crews, eight smokejumpers, two bulldozers and two helicopters totaling about 140 people. Additional resources have been ordered. The fire burns in steep and rugged terrain, requiring firefighters to walk a mile to reach the fire.
The hiking routes had to be changed due to the fire. Hikers will need to redirect their journey on the Continental Divide Trail at Township 16 S, Range 13 W, Section 13. This is where FS 855 intersects, allowing people to reroute via the road north and west from the 100 Allie Canyon trail to the east.
