Colorado Avalanche Camp Day 2: Nichushkin Skates, Manson back tomorrow

I made it into the second batch of skaters for the Colorado Avalanche today during training camp. Prior to my arrival, I was told that Val Nichushkin and Darren Helm were skating alone in non-contact jerseys after the main group. Josh Manson gave birth to her second child last night and is expected to return to camp tomorrow morning. Nichushkin and Helm do not know when they will return from their injuries.

As for the skaters in group two, it was still full of Colorado Eagles players. Coach Jared Bednar once again pushed the group hard, trying to test their limits. We’ve seen a variety of drills that test their skills and positioning.

There were a few stars today. Martin Kault, who knows this may be his last chance to make the Avalanche, pushed himself today. There seemed to be an extra push in his step today. Last year he hurt his shoulder on the last day of training camp and he looked really good. Unfortunately, he was never able to recover from his injury. He skated with Jean Luc Foudy and Jayson Megna, his line last season with the Eagles. Kaut said he liked the chemistry of the line and it seemed to help his game.

Another player who looked impressive today was Sampo Ranta. It’s another player who said he thought this might be his last chance at the Avalanche. Ranta was getting great shots from the blue line in addition to being more physical to get possession of the puck. He showed excellent positioning in order to open up to passes as well.

There are a few Colorado Avalanche players who will be bubble players this year like Charles Hudon and Brad Hunt, but only time will tell who makes the team. I will be at all practice starting tomorrow morning at 8:45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. I’ll have more on the veteran group tomorrow and what they look like as well. So stay tuned and we’ll see you tomorrow!
