Fifth Annual Windsor Grind Skating Competition Draws Crowds
Watch out, Tony Hawk and Matt McKeen. There are new kids in town.
About 20 kids headed to Eastman Skate Park in Windsor on Friday to showcase their best tricks and have a chance to win first place in the fifth annual Windsor Grind skateboard and scooter competition.
With just about all events scheduled for 2020, the competition has been ruled out due to the pandemic.
âI’m so excited to find this again,â said Amy McFadden of the Clearview Library District. âOur annual streak was interrupted last year with COVID, but we’re happy to be back. “
Friday’s event proved that a gap year doesn’t mean you lose your balance or your passion, as the contestants brought in some of the fiercest and somewhat frightening tricks to wow the judges and keep the audience entertained.
âIt’s such a good thing for our community because it makes good use of our skate park. The skate park is used by scooters and skaters anyway, but now we can get the library and the city involved, âsaid Tucker Valentine, library outreach assistant. âIt also gives them a chance to compete in a friendly environment and show their talent. “

The competition was open to both scooters and skateboarders aged 9-18. The event was hosted by the Clearview Library District and the City of Windsor.
Each competitor completed two 45 second runs and was able to use as much or as little skatepark as they wanted. The top three competitors then had a third 45-second racing opportunity to impress the judges.
The judges rated each skateboarder and scooter on the different tricks they performed, the difficulty of the tricks and the style of each competitor.
Jordan Payton in first place, returning competitor Kasen Samuels in second place and Khi Bateman in third place took the top three places in the scooter competition for the 9-12 age group.
For the 13-18 year old scooter group, Mitch Karsten came first, Sterling Barth taking second and Andrew Smithers third.

Sterling Barth, who competed in the 2019 competition, taking second place, showed off some of the tricks he had worked on in 2020, like a front flip and barrel roll.
For the skateboard competition, which featured skaters between the ages of 9 and 18, Ryan Waag took first place, Jonah Oldright finished second and Aiden Bindel took third place.
The winners of the competition received prizes from The bearing Scooter and BMX shop in Loveland.
