Figure skaters prepare for Christmas show after Ice World reopens
BOISE, Idaho – One of the regions hardest hit by the pandemic were hockey players and figure skaters who lost just about the only place they could spend time on the ice when Ice World closed its doors. ‘last year.
The town of Boise runs Ice World and they closed the indoor rink last fall due to COVID-19, they decided to keep the facility closed all summer to save money on the budget, but now that it’s open again, this community is thrilled.
“It’s amazing, it’s really a breath of fresh air,” said Tara Yano, who is choreographing a new show called Jingle Blades. “We have more and more ice time as it starts to open slowly, I hope we will get back to normal very soon.”
The skaters are working on a Christmas-themed show called Jingle Blades which will take place next Saturday at 6:00 p.m. at the Idaho Central Arena in downtown Boise.
“The kids worked really hard,” Yano said. “They’ve been working for a few months now and of course we didn’t attend the show last year due to COVID.”
It was easy enough to notice the camaraderie of the young figure skaters working together to perfect their routines as they prepared for the show.
“Skating really brought me closer to the people around me,” said Justine Lam, who has skated for seven years. “It’s a sport where we can really bond with each other, especially throughout the shows, but we have so many memories here, it’s really good now that it’s open again and this place we really missed. “
The Boise Figure Skating Club and the Learn to Skate Program run this show featuring boys and girls ranging from three years old to ’60s skaters.
Jingle Blades will also feature 2016 US Open champion Ashley Clark as she finds a way to mix fire and ice during the performance.
After such a difficult year, people can help support these skaters by purchasing a ticket to their show on Saturday night.
“You should come to our show, we would all appreciate the support,” Lam said.
Ice World has also reopened to the public, masks are mandatory, but Idaho Ice World has an online schedule that includes everything from free skating to pickup hockey and freestyle skating for figure skaters.
