Figure Skaters Show Off Cool Moves – Park Rapids Enterprise
The Park Rapids Figure Skating Club showed off a wide array of skill and artistry at their 33rd annual ice show, “Gotcha Covered,” Feb. 26-27 at Ted O. Johnson Arena. of Park Rapids.
Groups and individuals, from pint-sized newbies to high schooler Elise Torma, performed musical numbers on ice during a nearly two-hour program.
“They’ve worked hard all season, and this is their showcase, their chance to show what they’ve learned,” coach Katie Walsh said. “That’s my favorite part, just watching them go out and have fun.”
Walsh said she doesn’t know of any current members of the club who plan to pursue figure skating beyond high school, but one of the graduates last year is a member of a synchronized skating team at the College of Saint – Benedict in the Twin Cities metropolitan area. .
“I’m not sure yet for this year,” she said. “None of the girls have expressed that interest yet.”
Musical numbers included “I Love Rock ‘n’ Roll” by Joan Jett, “Jet Airliner” by the band Steve Miller, “Achy Breaky” by Billy Ray Cyrus, “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, “Respect” by Aretha Franklin, “Girls” by Cyndi Lauper. Just Wanna Have Fun,” Elvis Presley’s “Blue Suede Shoes,” Madonna’s “Ray of Light,” and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” among other songs.
There was also a “light number”, with skaters wearing phosphorescent costumes in a dark arena, performed to the song “Geronimo”.
“They always surprise me at the show,” Walsh said. “In training they do well, but then on the show they blow me away every year. They do such a good job.
