Fort St. James speed skater Liam Reidlinger returns from Canada West youth championships

It was a chance to gain more experience after competing at the BC Provincial Championships

Fort St. James speed skater Liam Reidlinger recently returned from Selkirk, Manitoba where he competed in the Canada West Youth Speed Skating Championships. Reidlinger ran personal bests including a 2:41.47 in the 1,500 meters – the fastest final time in his age group. He finished 10th out of 16 skaters in the U16 category.

For Reidlinger, it was a chance to gain more experience and race with others at his level after finishing the BC provincial championships. “I got a lot of experience, got a lot of advice from other skaters and got to see how many skaters there really are in BC and how successful we are. It was fun. I think the ice cream was quite different.

Reidlinger has ambitions to compete in the Olympics one day and was inspired by short track speed skater Jamie Macdonald, who also grew up in Fort St. James and whom he had the opportunity to meet. He said his success shows “the fact that such a small town and such a small club can produce such great skaters”.

He credits Fort St. James Falcons Speed Skating Club coach Keith Gordon for his progress so far. This summer, Reidlinger plans to focus on training on dry land so that next winter he can improve his technique and speed. He hopes to attend more competitions and reach a higher level.

The meeting in Manitoba has not taken place for the past two years due to the pandemic and normally takes place every March. It was Reidlinger’s second chance to compete in the last three years.

Now 16, Reidlinger has been skating since he was seven. “I used to ski Murray Ridge a lot and I think that helped me excel at speed skating and last winter I started snowboarding,” Reidlinger said. “I’ll be in open class next year and I can skate against 20-year-olds. Right now, I’m a bit limited in who I can skate with.
