Ice rink heading to Newport in anticipation of Christmas

FOLLOWING the announcement that an ice rink will be heading to Yarmouth during this festive period, another should be created in Newport.

This means that two rinks will be available to Islanders before Christmas.

In Newport, on November 20 in St Thomas’ Square, the Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) presents Christmas Day.

The family event will include a free outdoor ice rink and nightclub, with music, shows and entertainment.

The rink will be made of synthetic ice, like its Yarmouth counterpart.

“This year will be bigger and better than ever, with a free ice rink and nightclub located on Quay Street for everyone to enjoy,” said an NCCC spokesperson.

“There will even be free push penguins, as well as skating aids available for younger or less confident skaters to use.

“Throughout the day in St Thomas ‘Square and St James’ Square there will be shows and performances by Sandown & Shanklin Military Band, Steve Love, Vectis Brass, Emellia, Jukebox Jazz, Harmonix, Abbey Brass, The Combined School Choir, Medina Marching Band, Magic by Huxley, Balloon Modeling by Tracy’s Faces, The Grinch, The Snostoppin Huskies and more.

“Santa has even taken a little time out of his busy schedule and will be stopping by the cathedral in St Thomas Square from noon to 2 pm.

“Each child who visits Santa Claus will receive a free gift.

Join us at 6 p.m. for the finale, with the lights of Newport lit by actress Sue Hodges and Pippa the life-size polar bear.

“We can’t wait to see you there.”
