Here’s our guide to five family events happening this weekend.

Westquay on ice

Daily Echo:

Ice skating is back in Southampton!

Families can enjoy a seasonal skate in the beautiful setting of the historic city walls.

Westquay On Ice will run until January 8 and is accessible to everyone from beginners to avid skaters.

The Apres Bar next door serves a range of festive food, including mulled wine, winter cocktails, hot chocolate, and German Stein’s beer.

It also has several cozy mini chalets for up to 10 people which can be reserved in two-hour increments for festive get-togethers with family or friends.

Returning this weekend, Steam Illuminations is a unique, pixel-mappable Christmas digital LED train!

It’s an incredible light show on and in a steam train, made up of thousands of fully controllable LED lights and LED wristbands. This makes the train magical inside and out. Popular and traditional Christmas music will play with the lights on board the train.

There will also be comedic narration throughout your journey by the one and only Voiceover Man, as heard on Britain’s Got Talent and X-Factor!

Trains depart from Alresford or Alton and return to the departure station.

Switching on the Fareham Christmas lights

Daily Echo:

Attend the Fareham Borough Council Christmas Lights Nutcracker event at West Street Fareham on Saturdays between 10am and 7pm.

This free family event is a favorite on the events calendar with thousands of Fareham residents flocking to the pedestrianized West Street area to partake in face painting, funfair rides, festive gift stalls, food and delicious drinks and activities.

This year’s theme is the classic Christmas story of ‘The Nutcracker’ and the day’s festivities will be overseen by the Sugar Plum Fairy herself.

There will be performers throughout the day, both on the main stage and to entertain the crowds along West Street.

Of course Santa Claus will also make an appearance and the Christmas lights will be switched on at 5.30pm by the Mayor of Fareham, Cllr Mike Ford. The evening’s festivities will all be capped off with the spectacular, not-to-be-missed final show.
