New pop-up ice rink opens in Newtown Square, Delaware County

NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (WPVI) – Put on those skates! A new pop-up outdoor skating rink has arrived in Newtown Square.

The rink officially opens on Thursday, December 16, but it’s already slated to be one of Delaware County’s biggest winter attractions this season.

“A facility like this in Delaware County is long overdue,” said Terry Tracy of Flight on Ice.

The new 6,000 square foot rink is already attracting dozens of skaters who can’t wait to put on their shoes this holiday season.

This is the first time that an outdoor winter attraction like this has arrived in Delaware County.

“The rink is at the heart of the experience, but we will have food and drink, homes that people can spend time with,” he said.

There will also be live performances, but the location of the giant ice rink also has deep significance. It sits next to the Delaware County Veterans Memorial.

“This will help us expand our knowledge, especially to our children. They don’t know what the cost of freedom is. The cost of freedom is earned by veterans,” said Joe Daly, president of Delaware County Veterans Memorial.

“This rink is an extension of that, creating an endowment to keep the memorial in perpetuity strong, proud and a place everyone will appreciate,” said Nicole of Botton Robinson.

The ice rink had a smooth opening this weekend, but officially opens 7 days a week from this Thursday, December 16.
