Prince George’s expects new medical office building to improve county health care – NBC4 Washington
Officials in Prince George County, Maryland expect a new medical office to have a huge impact on the health of county residents.
The floor was inaugurated Wednesday on The Ella at Carillon – a 125,000-square-foot Class A medical space adjacent to the new Capital Region Medical Center at the University of Maryland.
Prince George County has some of Maryland’s poorest health outcomes, and many residents tend to go elsewhere for the medical attention they need. The county government and developers are working to fix this problem.
“It’s part of a long overdue healthcare continuum,” County Director Angela Alsobrooks said.
The plan is to attract doctors who will expand their practices in what will soon be downtown Largo – an area that will be full of shops, restaurants, nightlife and green spaces.
“We’re trying to create an outdoor community here where we’re going to have a central park that has a gathering place, a stage, we can play music, we can have events, we can have an outdoor rink. Said RPAI Assistant Vice President Craig Friedson.
When hospitals are built, it is expected that medical offices will follow, providing a network of health care – something the county has failed to attract in most of its existing hospital sites.
“I think the lack of practice care, or practice groups, is because there haven’t been quality hospitals and they haven’t been able to attract doctors, ”Friedson said.
Statistics show where basic health care is failing in the county.
“In the Greenbelt region, life expectancy is around 78 to 80 years,” said the Maryland Del. Jazz Lewis (D-District 24). “Suitland in the south of our county, it’s been about 60 years. There is almost a 20-year life expectancy gap.
The plan is to create thriving medical facilities to anchor this development and the future health of county residents.
“The first thing we need to focus on and one of the top priorities of this administration is to make sure that we are investing in the health of the people who are here,” Alsobrooks said.
The Ella at Carillon is expected to be completed by the fall of next year, but the rest of the development will be mixed-use and very dense, according to the developer. They are developing it in phases and expect it to take another 10 to 20 years to complete.
In addition to retail, restaurants and offices, the Carillon is expected to include an amphitheater, apartments, two Marriott hotels and houses. It has been compared to downtown Silver Spring.
