Vacant property in Taranto to become a parking lot

A vacant Taranto property near the old Tarena ice rink is set to be turned into a car park this year.

Bridges & Co., the construction company that bought the Tarena, is also looking to buy the neighboring property at 204 Lock St., zoning officer Anthony Bruni said.

“They would use it for employee parking and it would free up parking spaces for residents,” Bruni said.

Wexford-based construction company Bridges bought the Tarena in 2021 for use as a storage facility and staging area.

Tarena’s owners closed the rink in 2020 because of the pandemic, saying it was too expensive to resume operations.

Representatives for Bridges were unavailable for comment.

Bruni said buying the vacant land allows the company to be a good neighbor.

“We’ve had them pull cars off the street, and we think that’s a good use of property,” Bruni said.

As proposed, the land would accommodate approximately 12 vehicles. It would not be open to public parking.

Council Speaker Scott Dadowski said he appreciates the space moves employee vehicles off the street and opens up more space for resident parking.

“I think it’s a sign that they’re investing in the borough,” he said. “Buying a second property and using it that way is a win-win.”

The lot at 204 Lock St. has been empty since a fire destroyed a home there in 2021.

Bruni said a closing date for the property should be expected in the coming months.

In addition, the council approved a decision aimed at no longer authorizing the posting of signs and leaflets on the poles of public services in the borough.

Citing safety concerns, members said it was also in line with the borough’s cleanup efforts.

Violators will be charged with a summary offense and could be subject to a fine of $300 to $1,000.
