Winter activities in County Kern to get you in the holiday spirit

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) – The holiday season is back, along with many other Kern County activities that had to go virtual last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. There is a vacation activity for everyone this year, whether you want to stay in the comfort of your vehicle, stay active with an 8k run, or try out ice skating.

Here is an alphabetical list of activities and events happening in the city.


Bakersfield Christmas Town

The Christmas town of Bakersfield is back this year as both a walk-in and drive-thru event. Activities include a lighted display, meet Santa Claus, toboggan run, train ride, ice rink, laser tag, letter to Santa, and more.

Sunday to Thursday: 5:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Friday and Saturday: 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m.

A Christmas Drag Queen

A Drag Queen Christmas hosted by Trinity The Tuck and Monét X Change arrives at the historic Bakersfield Fox Theater. The show will feature vacation performances from the reality show’s contestants. All tickets can be purchased online at AXS.com. Proof of vaccination or a negative COVID-19 test is not required to attend.

Holiday Movie Screenings at the Fox Theater

The Historic Bakersfield Fox Theater has several film screenings scheduled for December that will get you into the holiday spirit.

Hanukkah 8K Race

Temple Beth El Bakersfield is hosting a virtual Hanukkah 8 Krazy Kilometers race from Monday November 29 to Monday December 6. Participants will complete an 8K or 2K virtual or solo run anytime during the eight days of Hanukkah.

Virtual races can take place anywhere. Courses will also be set up in the Panorama Vista reserve for solo races.

Participants will be invited to download the mobile application, RaceJoy, to follow their races and access the courses. The app will also give audio signals along the route and allow participants to display their arrival time. Prizes will be awarded to the best finishers in the 8 km solo race. There will also be a holiday costume contest and Hanukkah cookie design every night. This year there will be team registration for all races in the event. Teams of 3 or more will benefit from a registration discount.

HolidayLights in PEACE

Tickets are now on sale for this year’s HolidayLights at CALM, which will be a drive-thru event. The California Living Museum says last year’s drive-through event was a huge success and was named one of the nation’s top holiday light shows.

Valley Children’s Ice Center – Ice Skating

The Valley Children’s Ice Center in Bakersfield has announced the return of public skating. Hours and admission vary depending on the ice center schedule. They publish a new program every week. Skate rentals are available.
